Important Note

Important ordering note for Inpatients:

The laboratory accepts no more than one specimen for this test per admission.

The laboratory does not accept specimens from inpatients after the third hospital day, without prior consultation with an individual who can explain the utility of testing.

Test stool for Clostridium difficile toxin for all patients over 6 months of age with clinically significant diarrhea and a history of antibiotic exposure.  Consider C. difficile testing as an alternative to routine microbiologic studies for inpatients over 6 months of age who have test requests for routine enteric pathogens.

These recommendations are for diagnostic testing.  Different guidelines may apply to tests ordered for follow-up.
