Interpretive Guidelines:
ADA Criteria for Diagnosis and Risk of Diabetes:
A1c ≥ 6.5% is diagnostic for Diabetes
A1c results between 5.7 – 6.4%, increased risk of Diabetes (Prediabetes)
ADA Recommendations for Glycemic Control in Adult Patients with Known Diabetes:
A1c levels < 7% in non-pregnant adults
A1c levels < 8% in patients with history of severe hypoglycemia, limited life expectancy, extensive comorbid conditions, and patients requiring multiple glucose lowering medications including insulin.
ADA Recommendations for Glycemic Control in Pediatric and Adolescents Patients:
A1c levels < 7.5% across the pediatric/ adolescent age group.
