Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Hospital Preferred Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Lithium heparin gel

 

Outreach Preferred Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Serum gel


Patient instructions during testing:
1.  Patient must be fasting.
2.  Patient must remain in the test area during the test.  Must site quietly.
3.  Patient should not chew gum, smoke, or eat.
4.  Patient may sip water if thirsty.
5.  Tell patient to inform you if they feel week, dizzy, or have symptoms such as malaise or sweating.

Protocol Instructions

1.  DO NOT draw fasting sample unless specifically ordered by the MD.  Order fasting glucose if ordered.

2.  Give 50 gram loading dose (Glucola) to patient to drink.

3.  Draw sample 1 hour from when the patient finished drinking the Glucola.

Interpretive Guidelines:  Glucose 1 Hour Screen

Glucose screen values ≥ 135 mg/dL constitutes a positive screen.  Positive screens should be followed by a diagnostic 3 hour OGTT.
