Guidelines issued by the National Kidney Foundation recommend screening patient with diabetes with microalbumin to detect kidney disease (DKD). A positive screening test for microalbuminuria should be repeated twice within 3-6 months. An elevated urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) can also be seen in hypertension, lipid abnormalities, immune disorders, vigorous exercise, urinary tract infection, dehydration and blood in urine.
To determine if it is Diabetic Kidney disease vs. chronic kidney disease, the National Kidney Foundation recommends the use of glomerular filtration rate (GFR):
