Specimen Requirements

Submit the following specimen:   

 

Specimen Type:  Whole blood

Container/Tube: Minimum (2) 2.7 mL blue top tubes 

Specimen Volume: Tube must be filled to its intended whole blood capacity; minimum requirement 3 mL of plasma

Collection Instructions:

1.  Tube must be filled to fill line

2.  Use a 21 gauge needle

 

Preferred specimen:  < 4 hours, OK to freeze platelet poor plasma

Unacceptable specimens:  Non blue top, partially filled blue top, hemolyzed specimen, clotted sample, > 4 hours old

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient

 

Storage Temperature Stability:

Room Temperature:  4 hours

Frozen:  14 days (platelet poor plasma)

If specimen cannot be delivered within 4 hours, the specimen must be double spun and plasma frozen.
