Specimen Requirements

Submit the following specimen:

 

  • Specimen Type: Whole Blood
  • Container/Tube: Citrated blue top tube
  • Specimen volume: Full blue top tube
  • Collection Instructions
    1. Venipuncture must be performed using a 21 G or larger butterfly needle
    2. Collect a full discard tube first using a non-additive or blue top tube. DO NOT use a red top tube. Discard after filling.
    3. After collecting the blue top tube, gently invert 3-4 time to mix
    4. Do not centrifuge tubes.
    5. Hand carry to Blood Bank – DO NOT send through pneumatic tube system!
    6. A-Line or Similar: Using 2 syringes, draw at least 10 ml discard in the first syringe, followed by 3 ml in the second syringe, pulling gently on the plunger. Using a safe transfer device (or a 21-gauge or larger needle) allow the citrate tube to fill completely by vacuum.
