Specimen Requirements
Submit the following specimen:
Hospital Preferred Specimen Type:
Specimen Type: Whole Blood EDTA (original tube)
Container/Tube: Larger 6.0 mL lavender EDTA tube
Special Instructions: Send Blood in Original Container.
Outreach Preferred Specimen Type:
Container/Tube: Serum gel 6.0 mL tube (cannot be shared)
Spin Instructions:
Serum gel: Allow to sit for 30 minutes prior to spinning. Spin within 2 hours of collection.

Inpatient samples:

Outpatient samples:
Repeatedly reactive samples referred as follows:
- HIV-1/2 Ab Differentiation w/ Reflex to HIV-1/HIV-2 by Qualitative NAAT (ARUP Test Code 2012669)
INTERPRETIVE GUIDELINES:
NEGATIVE:
Specimen was non-reactive for HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies, and p24 antigen. A negative test result does not exclude the possibility of exposure to or infection with HIV. HIV antibodies and/or p24 antigen may be undetectable in some stages of the infection and in some clinical conditions.
SENT FOR CONFIRMATION:
Sample sent to reference lab for confirmation using supplemental tests for HIV-1/HIV-2 antibodies and/or p24 antigen. In specimens giving indeterminate supplemental test results, testing of a subsequent sample drawn at a later date (such as 1-6 months) is recommended.
