Interpretive Data:

Free testosterone concentration is calculated using total testosterone (measured by immunoassay) and the binding constant of testosterone, albumin, and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG).

For patients with very low testosterone values consider alternative methodology (Mass Spectrometry).

Due to DHEA-S cross-reactivity with Testosterone, conditions with elevated DHEA-S such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and congenital adrenal hyperplasia could have falsely elevated testosterone values. For these individuals, testing by mass spectrometry is recommended.

No reference intervals have been established for males or females younger than 21 years of age.
